A friend of mine and myself got to watch Devin Townsend play in downtown San Diego. Devin Townsend plays all different types of music, from heavy metal to ambient music. He is also a amazing guitar player. I play the guitar and he has influenced me alot. He played a few songs from his solo works and did a few songs from his band called Strapping Young Lad. His music fuses heavy metal with jazz elements. It made me feel like a horrible guitar player after watching him play. He’s fast and creative with his guitar.

Nile is a death metal band that has strong middle eastern and egyptian influences in their music. They are one of the only death metal bands that incorporate Egyptian styles and themes into their music. I got to see them recently at the Galaxy Theater in Santa Ana. Their guitar player Karl Sanders is considered one of the best heavy metal guitar players of all time to his innovative style and his fast and precise playing. Watching them was amazing because they sound incredible live.

Here are some more spreads of the recent work I did.

I checked out the site youthedesigner.com . It has different pieces of graphic art work from many different people. From shirts to flyers to web design and illustrations. One particular work I liked was by Phillip Schillings. His artwork is amazing and mixes graphic art and photography. http://www.youthedesigner.com/2008/06/18/10-grand-graphic-designers/. I really like his style of art. It reminds of street and grafiti art but he is using photography and graphic art. His art is very animated and very colorful. Especially his ‘Liquify’ series. The flowing designs of his art remind me of water and paint spilling. His art is very well crafted and his photographs are awesome. I really like his combination of the graphic art and photography. I like doing that kind of art as well. I think that is what attracted me to his works. 10_3paraonecolorbunch This is one of his works that I really like.

Stefen Sagmeister, is another artist I checked out. He’s done album covers and some extreme types of art such as cuting words all into his body. Here is a link to that particular work http://www.sagmeister.com/work5.html . His work is very interesting. His style is weird and bizarre which is what I like about his work. He has no fear to art to extremes which I find admirable. I also like his text style. His text style looks scribbled and weird. Its very noticable and recognizable. One of my favorite pictures he did was the Lou Reed album cover. loureedI really like how he integrated his text style into the picture. I also like how he made the text look like its tattooed into the mans face on the cover. I really like his work and it influenced me to have no fear and just do what I like.

The artist banksy is a street artist mostly. His art work is amazing. I viewed his website and his outdoor works. I really like how he works his art in with the enviornment and makes his art seem like its interacting with things. My favorite is a boy that looks like Bart Simpson and he’s writing on a wall and it says I will Not copy what I see on the simpsons.banskysimpsonsgrafitti

I really like how his work has a social commentary on things in life and how it pokes fun at current events, politics or his stuff is just playful and funny and fun to look at. His art influences my work by taking a plan looking place and making it look interesting by adding things to the enviornment. I do this digitally while he goes out on the streets and does it.

Three weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing a Brazilian death metal band called Krisiun. They are from Sao Paulo Brazil. Their drummer is well known in the heavy metal world due to the fact that he refuses to use lots of cuts and special equipment. What you are on the albums is what you hear live. He’s extreamly fast and precise. The guitar player if very talented too. He adds a ‘groove metal’ style to their music. Groove metal has country influences. They played over 12 songs and it was awesome to get to see them live.

Here are the images I’ve been working on in spread form.

The book workshop was lots of fun. Terrilynn showed us some of her works and we got to make our piece of art using old books. I cut a large hole right down the middle of my book and so I can place or hide things in it. I also doodled on a few pages and made some designs on the front pages.
